- Sadio Mane has apologized for missing his visit to Senegal after his CAF award win
- The Liverpool star was billed to visit Senegal for an event organized which the country's president was due to attend
- Mane disclosed that there was a flight disruption while promising to visit Senegal in the nearest future
New African football king, Sadio Mane, has issued a heart-felt apology note for missing his much-anticipated visit to Senegal after winning the CAF best player of the year award.
The Bambali-born star, on Tuesday night, January 8, capped his prosperous year with the best prize in the African continent, beating off stiff competition from Man City's Riyad Mahrez and Liverpool's Mo Salah.
Mane finished second behind Mohamed Salah in 2017 and 2018 and also finished third in 2016 before winning the 2019 edition in Egypt, all thanks to his superb performances for Liverpool.
The 27-year-old star was billed to land in his country on Wednesday as a ceremony had been organized in Senegal's capital Dakar, with the country's president Macky Sall due to attend.
Unfortunately, Mane could not make it due to flight disruption- what he said was beyond his club's control.
"It was my plan to first fly to Senegal to thank the people of my country and recognise them for everything they have given me on my journey, but unfortunately we were unable to make the visit,'' Mane said.
"Now we have a big match against Tottenham this weekend which I must focus on and be ready for, but it is true I am disappointed I was unable to return home to say thank you because of some problems beyond our control.
"So, I will return to Senegal as soon as possible because it is something very important to me - I will never forget what everybody did for me," the Liverpool forward said.
Mane's CAF award is the first for Senegal since El Hadji Diouf, who was also playing for Liverpool at the time he won it in 2002.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Sadio Mane walked into the podium like a true African king- knowing that the stage was made for him - and won the CAF best player of the year award to send delight into the hearts of football lovers across the world.
The recognition is, of course, overdue for the sensational Liverpool star who trailed behind his teammate Salah on the same podium in 2017 and 2018.
