The incident, the report said, occurred at about 10 am on Wednesday, January 8.

One witness was quoted as saying the bandits rode on a number of motorcycles, arrived the checkpoint and overpowered the officers.

"The gunmen also seized several motorists and passengers and disappeared with them into the nearby Rugu forest," the witness said.

The report quoted a senior officer of the customs as saying: “Yes, we are aware of the incident but it is still fresh as it just happened...and an investigation is still ongoing.

"We have not even compiled the report and of course, I am not the right person to speak officially on the issue."

Bandits had recently blocked a part of the Jibia-Batsari road and reportedly kidnapped about 19 motorists and passengers.
