- Riyad Mahrez has congratulated Sadio Mane on his CAF African best award
- The Man City forward believed the Liverpool star was deserving of the coveted prize
- Mahrez missed the award's gala night as he was in action for Man City the same night
Manchester City and Algerian forward, Riyad Mahrez, has congratulated Sadio Mane after the Liverpool star won the CAF award for the African best player of the year on Tuesday night, January 7.
Mahrez, one of the three contenders for the award, missed out as Mane clinched the coveted prize, also beating his Liverpool teammate Mohammed Salah.
The Algerian failed to register his presence at the award's gala night as he was in action for Man City during the EFL Cup against United.
But reacting to Mane being crowned African king in a message on his Twitter account, the AFCON-winning star congratulated the Liverpool forward for the award ''well deserved.''
He, however, challenged Mane, saying hopefully they will fight for the award next year.
"Congratulations to Sadio for his trophy well deserved " Mahrez said.
"And sorry, I couldn't come but I had to start scoring for the 2020 trophy see you next year inch'Allah."
Mahrez won the award in 2016 and was one of three nominees for the 2019 prize alongside Mane and Salah, who picked up the gong in 2017 and 2018.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Mohamed Salah snubbed the CAF awards 2019 held in Egypt on Tuesday night, January 8, and instead opted to train with the Liverpool squad at their Melwood training ground.
The Egyptian star was billed to fight for the award alongside his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane and Manchester City's Riyad Mahrez.
