Mohamed Salah congratulates Sadio Mane after winning Africa's best player

Mohamed Salah has congratulated his Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane after emerging as the new Africa Footballer of the Year.

The Senegalese striker who finished in the final three podiums in the last two years behind Salah, finally scooped the accolade for the first time.

Salah was not in attendance for the ceremony in his homeland but he was quick to honour the 27-year-old striker.

The former AS Roma striker took to his Instagram handle and said: "Congrats bro."

Mane was in superb form last season, scoring 30 goals in all competitions for Liverpool and helping them win the Champions League.

The former Southampton striker is already up and running for the Reds this season, scoring 15 goals and are on course for their first Premier League title in over 30 years.

Mane came fourth behind Cristiano Ronaldo, Virgil van Dijk and Lionel Messi in the 2019 Ballon d'Or accolade.

And after he was handed the CAF 2019 best men's player award he said: "I am really happy and at the same time really proud to win this award.

"I would like to thank my family, especially my uncle who is here today, without forgetting all the Egyptian people as well and of course my national team coach Aliou Cisse, my teammates with the national team and the staff at the Federation.

"I also thank Liverpool Football Club, my teammates, the staff and everybody there.

"It is a big day for me.. I don't really know how to say it but I would love to thank all the Senegalese people.

"They have been with me all the time and they push me to do better.

"Also the people from my village.. I have come very far, Bambali is a very small village and I am sure they are watching on the TV.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that CAF 2019 Awards saw former South Africa's women's national team coach Desiree Ellis went home with the best women's coach award.

The former Bayana Bayana captain beat Alain Djeumfa of Cameroon and ex-Super Falcons gaffer Thomas Dennerby to clinch the accolade.
