Umahi denies membership of APC, says he remains a PDP governor

- Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state has denied being a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC)

- Commissioner for information in Ebonyi, Uchenna Orji, attributed the claim to the handiwork of blackmailers of the state government

- Orji noted that Umahi only said he is the governor of the state and as a result, accommodates members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the APC

Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi state has denied being a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as widely reported on Monday, January 6.

Umahi, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), made the denial through the state's commissioner for information, Uchenna Orji, on Tuesday, January 7.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Orji noted that the government was forced to react to the report because the state's image was at stake.

“It was nonsensical for someone to write such report because no one can be in both the PDP and APC at the same time.

“The parties have registers to prove this as the governor only said during the concerned function that he is the governor of both parties and everyone in Ebonyi," he said.

Orji said there are people who are ready to defend the governor anytime the issue of anti-party politics is brought up to blackmail the governor.

“The governor’s strides are glaring to all and he has always maintained that after party politics, administration of the state takes over,” he argued while pointing fingers at alleged blackmailers as being behind the report.

The commissioner pleaded with the media to help achieve what he called developmental journalism as he bragged that Ebonyi, under Umahi, is being made the best state in the country.

Legit.ng had quoted reports as indicating that Umahi, who recently spoke to delegates who came to pay him a visit, said he is the only governor in Nigeria who can belong to both APC and PDP without consequences.

Doyin Okupe, a former senior special assistant on public affairs to Goodluck Jonathan when he was president of Nigeria, had also vowed to forward the claim by Umahi to the PDP headquarters.
