A violent clash between supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and those of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Imo state has led to the shooting to death of a young man identified as Amajuru Ahamefule.
Channels TV reports that the Ahamefule was killed on Monday, January 6, in Isu local government area of the state.
The killing was confirmed by the police spokesperson in Imo state, Orlando Ikeokwu, who disclosed that the clash started after some local government chairmen who were suspended by Governor Emeka Ihedioha-led administration tried to take over office from the interim management committee put in place by the governor in all the local government areas in the state.
The local government chairmen claimed to have gotten a purported Supreme Court judgment which mandated them to resume office.
However, the police stated that members of the interim management committee and supporters of the PDP vehemently opposed the forceful takeover leading to the crisis which in turn led to the rapid shooting.
The spokesperson noted that while Ahemefule was shot dead in the process, several other people sustained injuries.
The Imo state police command has urged both parties to embrace peace while it investigates the incident.
In another report, members of the APC in Imo state have accused the minister of state for education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, of getting involved in anti-party activities.
The APC members said Nwajiuba is working against the party in favour of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) due to his closeness to the Imo state governor, Emeka Ihedioha.
Daily Trust reports that the deputy youth leader for the APC in the state, Chidi Unezeh, said the minister's closeness to the ruling party in the state is a source of worry.
