Army to Borno governor - Your statement capable of undermining our success

- The Nigerian Army has faulted Borno state governor over the statement that security agencies are extorting money from travellers

- According to the army, the allegation is capable of reversing the gains recorded in the fight against insurgency

- Meanwhile, the army has promised to carry out a thorough investigation

Following the allegations made against security operatives by the Borno state governor, Babagana Zulum, the Nigerian Army says the statement is counterproductive.

According to the army, the action of the governor is capable of reversing the gains recorded so far in the fight against the insurgents and other criminal elements across the country, The Nations reports.

Recall that Zulum had accused the Military and the Police of collecting a bribe of N1,000 from travellers who do not have national identity cards.

The army, in a statement by Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, its operations media coordinator, said: ”It is important to unequivocally observe that public outburst, particularly by eminent personalities such as a State Executive, could be counterproductive and indeed capable of reversing the gains recorded so far in the ongoing fight against insurgents and other criminal elements across the nation.”

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that less than twenty-four hours after he lambasted the combined military and police operatives for extorting travellers on Maiduguri-Damaturu highway, Governor Zulum paid tribute to headquarters of the Nigerian Army for the swiftness with which it announced its readiness to investigate the allegation.

Legit.ng reported that Zulum spoke in reaction to a statement issued on the night of Monday, January 6, by the coordinator of the Army’s operations’ media, Colonel Aminu Iliyasu.

The governor, in a statement released by his spokesman, Isa Gusau, said the speedy response from the army headquarters reaffirmed what every Nigerian already knows about the exceptional leadership credentials of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, and many others that have done so much for Borno and Nigeria.
