The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council has called on the southeast governors to emulate their southwest colleagues by creating a joint security outfit for the region.
The Cable reports that the group's president, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and the secretary-general, Okwu Nnabuike, made the request in a statement.
The group, which expressed readiness to assist the governors on the project, said the joint security outfit will address the security challenges facing the southeast region, especially the herdsmen crisis.
“We want the southeast governors' forum to replicate in the southeast, the new security outfit recently announced by southwest governors “Amotekun” which will commence work on January 9th 2020," the statement partly reads.
The group said ensuring adequate security in the region will lead to a reduction in crimes as well as boost the region's economy.
It added that the security outfit will also create employment opportunities for the teeming Igbo youths who are currently unemployed.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the southwestern part of Nigeria now has its own security outfit named 'Amotekun' and would commence operation across the zone on January 9, according to Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state.
Fayemi said on Wednesday, January 1, in his new year message, that the job of Amotekun, created by the six governors of the region, would be to complement the country's security agencies in a bid for peace.
