UPDATED: Bomb blast kills 9 on a crowded bridge in Borno

- Not less than nine persons have been killed in a bomb blast that took place on Monday, January 6, in Borno

- The bomb, picked up by a little boy who mistook it for metal scrap, detonated on a crowded bridge in the market town of Gamboru

- According to eyewitnesses, the blast which took place on a bridge that links Nigeria and Cameroon left about 26 persons seriously injured

A bomb that detonated on a crowded bridge on Monday, January 6, in Borno state killed at least nine persons.

According to BBC, it all happened when a child of about 10-years-old picked up the bomb mistaking it for metal scrap and intending to sell it.

However, the bomb detonated killing both the boy and the said nine persons on the bridge in the market town of Gamboru. The bridge links Nigeria with the Cameroonian town of Fotokol.

Speaking to journalists, an eyewitness, Modu Ali Said, said: "It is an unfortunate day for us to witness this frustrating and devastating incident in our community.

"I just heard a loud sound of explosions, before I realized I saw many of our friends and colleagues were killed."

Legit.ng had reported that the Nigerian Army said that Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province terrorists are being subdued due to the efforts of troops in the Operation Lafiya Dole.

Colonel Aminu Iliyasu, the Nigerian Army operations media coordinator, who revealed this on Wednesday, November 27, said that troops defeated three top terrorists after engaging them at Sabon Gari which is close to Sambisa forest, The Nation reports.

Iliyasu said that the victorious soldiers recovered from the insurgents, items such as 81 rounds of 7.62mm Special ammunition, food items and seven bicycles.

He added: "...troops of 25 Task Force Brigade deployed at Damboa swiftly responded to a distress call by some residents of Grijan Village along Damboa – Chibok road.
