A group claiming to be Iranian hackers have defaced the website of the United States of America Federal Depository Library Program.
The group replaced the homepage of the website with an image of a bloodied face of the US president, Donald Trump on Saturday, January 4.
On the image used by the pro-Iranian group, there was inscription stating that the website was hacked by Iran Cyber Security Group Hackers.
The message by the hackers said: "Hacked by Iran Cyber Security Group Hackers. This is an only small part of Iran's cyber ability! We're always ready."
It said: “Martyrdom was (Soleimani’s)… reward for years of implacable efforts."
Not just stopping at the message, the hackers ensured that the library's website remained inaccessible for some time.
"The Federal depository libraries must offer free, public access to their Federal collections, even if the depository library is part of a private academic institution. In addition, information specialists are available at these libraries to assist the American public to locate Federal information," the US said on the About Us page of the library.
Also, while another image dropped by the hackers had inscriptions written in the Arabic language, displaying Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the Iranian flag.
“With his departure and with God’s power, his work and path will not cease and severe revenge awaits those criminals who have tainted their filthy hands with his blood and blood of the other martyrs,” it said.
Although the website is back to normal, CBSNews reports that the spokesperson for the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, a division of the Department of Homeland Security, confirmed the hack by the pro-Iranian group.
The official said the CISA is monitoring the situation with the federal library website and its federal partners.
"We are aware the website of the Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP) was defaced with pro-Iranian, anti-US messaging. At this time, there is no confirmation that this was the action of Iranian state-sponsored actors. The website was taken offline and is no longer accessible," the CISA spokesperson said.
