The planned withdrawal of troops from internal security operations will not be rushed says President Muhammadu Buhari.
The president made the clarification following the negative reactions over the news.
Buhari disclosed this in a statement issued by his senior special assistant on media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu.
He consequently reassured Nigerians that withdrawal of the military from areas where peace had been restored will be gradual and carefully planned.
The president it will not abrupt or arbitrary to jeopardise the successes already recorded by the military.
He added that his administration will not abandon citizens in need of protection.
The president therefor urged Nigerians to carefully study the statement following a security council meeting with service chiefs.
He said the statement emphasised that the withdrawal of troops will be done after an “assessment” to determine areas where peace had returned to enable civil authorities assume full control, the Nation reports.
Legit.ng reported earlier that Frank Mba, the spokesman of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), revealed the intention and readiness of the police to provide security for Nigerians.
The deputy commissioner of police also said the Force is ready to partner with government at all levels in safe-guiding Nigerians.
He said: “The Nigeria Police Force is ever ready to play its fundamental and constitutional role in providing security within the internal space of Nigeria."
