The US president, Donald Trump has justified the Friday, January 3, airstrike that killed an Iranian commander, Major General Qassem Soleimani at the Baghdad International Airport.
Trump on twitter justified the killing of Soleimani on the grounds that the Iranian general had killed or badly wounded thousands of Americans over an extended period of time.
The US president claimed the general was planning to kill more Americans before he was neutralised by the airstrike.
He further blamed Soleimani for the death of millions of people, including the recent large number of protesters killed in Iran itself.
The US president played down the killing of the commander by saying the Iranian people were not as sad over the killing as their leaders were making it seem.
Meanwhile, the United States on Friday, January 3, urged its citizens in Iraq to leave the country immediately over security concerns.
The State Department issued the security alert after Iran promised harsh retaliation against the United States for an airstrike that killed top Iranian general, Qassem Soleimani.
The security alert also stated that all consular operations in Iraq were suspended due to Iranian-backed militia attacks at the US embassy compound.
In a related report, the authorisation of the United States' airstrike that killed a top Iranian commander in Iraq has left the US Congress sharply divided along party lines.
The airstrike which has raised concerns among the Democrats lawmakers is being applauded by Republican lawmakers who considered the move as justice to scores of American military families.
Democrat lawmakers warned that the airstrike could lead to violence which the country has tried to avoid over the years.
On the contrary, Republican lawmakers praised Trump for the strike. According to them, Maj. Gen. Suleimani killed by airstrike was responsible for the deaths of hundreds of American soldiers during the Iraq war.
