- Luís Nani has denied playing the shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney at United
- The winger was an integral part of Sir Alex Ferguson's historical dominance in England
- Nani said every player at United was a star which made it easy for the club to excel
Former Manchester United star, Luís Nani, has dusted off the insinuations that he was always playing a second fiddle behind Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese played alongside Rooney and his countryman under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson where he won a couple of trophies including four Premier League titles and UCL.
Nani, who now plays for Orlando City, spent eight seasons at Old Trafford between 2007 and 2015, taking after Ronaldo’s footsteps from Sporting C.P.
The winger had over two hundred appearances in Red Devils' jersey before departing England in search of new challenges elsewhere.
Speaking about his time in the Premier League, the 33-year-old star said he never felt he was playing in the shadow of Ronaldo and other big stars in the squad, adding that all players were champions.
“No. I never felt in the shadow of Ronaldo, [Ryan] Giggs or Rooney," Nani told Tribuna Expresso.
“And there were no shadows at that time. We had a fantastic team. I played with Ronaldo lots of times as a starter.
"Our team had two or three playing styles and when it came to facing certain teams it was Nani and Ronaldo, while others were Ronaldo with Rooney.
Nani, who shared striking resemblance with his Portuguese teammate in terms of playing pattern and physical mien, said he was tipped to replace Ronaldo when he sealed world record move to Real Madrid.
“When Cristiano left, an illusion was created, people said me and Ronaldo had a very similar style, there were lots of comparisons and they wanted a replacement for him – and they had me.
“But they got it wrong; they shouldn’t have said we have the new Ronaldo, they should have said we have Nani. Better or worse, with different qualities.
“But I was a different player; I never scored so many goals, but got more assists," the winger further submitted.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that Cristiano Ronaldo has been axed out of the team of the season in the new list released by Goal despite having a fabulous debut season in Serie A.
Ronaldo was exceptional for Juventus with his killer instinct helping the Old Lady to another historical domestic win.
