Enugu Airport ready before Easter - FG assures Nigerians

- The minister of aviation has said that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu would be re-opened by Easter

- Hadi Sirika said the work being carried out at the airport is satisfactory

- According to the minister, Nigerians would soon begin a countdown on the reopening of the airport which was shut down in August 2019

Nigeria's minister of aviation, Hadi Sirika, has assured that the Akanu Ibiam International Airport would be ready and re-opened before the celebration of Easter in April 2020.

Daily Trust reports that Sirika while speaking after an inspection of the Airport alongside the permanent secretary of the ministry of aviation and the managing director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Captain Rabiu Yadudu, said the work being carried out at the airport is satisfactory.

Others present at the inspection of the airport were the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Aviation, Nnolim Nnaji, and some officials of the Enugu state government.

Continuing, the minister said he would soon begin a countdown on the reopening of the airport which was shut down in August 2019.

Sirika said: “I am very satisfied with the level of work done. According to the programme of work approved and established by us, we are beating the deadline. We will deliver the runway before Easter."

The minister also inspecting the new terminal at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport assured the people of Enugu and all users of the airport to expect a brand new airport.

He promised that the "new" airport will have all the modern facilities and equipment to enhance safe flight operations.

“The runway when completed will have other equipment such as the instrument landing system, airfield lighting, taxiway lighting and every single equipment and system that will enhance safe flight operations,” Sirika said.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that airport staff, Josephine Ugwu, who returned money found at five different occasions at work has been honoured by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ugwu was recognised and honoured with an ICPC Integrity Award for her unwavering honesty and integrity displayed while carrying out her job as a former cleaner at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

The award was presented to her by President Buhari on November 19, at the opening of the two-day National Summit on Diminishing Corruption in Public Sector held at the State House Banquet Hall in Abuja.
