A senior advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, on Wednesday, January 1, commended President Muhammadu Buhari for his declaration over the much rumoured third term bid.
Falana while reacting to the president's New Year's broadcast to Nigerians said the "unconstitutional" third term bid for President Buhari was orchestrated by some members of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
He said: “It is good that President Buhari has disowned the group."
He, however, called for the liberalisation of Nigeria's political space to stop all forms of harassment against opposition members and federal government critics.
The senior lawyer warned that all court orders giving must be obeyed and complied with by all ad sundry.
“The DSS, police and other security agencies should release hundreds that are being detained without trial. The impunity displayed through total disregard of the Constitution and other laws should stop," Falana said.
Also, reacting to the overstay of some public office holders, Falana said all officers whose terms of office have expired should be retired.
“All new appointments should reflect the federal character in line with the provisions of the Constitution," he said.
Expressing doubt over possible execution of some of the projects listed in the 2020 budget which was recently signed, Falana said: “With 70 per cent of the budget for recurrent expenditure and 25 per cent for debt servicing the projects referred to by President Buhari will not be funded."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that President Buhari had promised he would leave office once his second term ends in the year 2023.
The president made the disclosure during his New Year's broadcast on Wednesday, January 1.
President Buhari's declaration on a third term bid also debunks all rumours and reports that he has plans to run for the office of the president again in 2023.
