Nasarawa governor denies APC ever considered a third term for Buhari

- President Muhammadu Buhari would never have accepted to run for a third term in office against the provision of the constitution, Nasarawa governor Abdullahi Sule, says

- Governor Sule says the APC never even considered bringing up the subject with the Nigerian leader because the party knew he would flat-out reject it his respect for the rule of law

- The president laid doubts to rest when he restated in his New Year day message that he would leave office on May 29, 2023, as provided by the constitution

The governor of Nasarawa state, Abdullahi Sule, has denied that the APC at any point ever considered presenting President Muhammadu Buhari for a third term in office.

Channels TV reports on Wednesday, January 1 that Governor Sule made the revelation on a live political programme on the television station.

He said: “I think the APC had never even thought about a third term agenda if it did, I was never a part of it because the man being talked about will not accept it.

“Therefore I don’t think anybody will carry this kind of news and face the president about third term agenda, so if there is such news, I don’t think it will fly.”

He said the party had always understood that owing to President Buhari's respect for the rule of law, he would never try to manoeuvre the provisions of the constitution to give him another term.

“So this is not the president that will begin to manoeuver and change the constitution in order for him to remain in power,” he added.

Meanwhile, on Wednesday, January 1, President Buhari promised that he would not stay an extra day after his second term tenure officially ends on May 29, 2023.

The president said this in a nation-wide broadcast to the nation through a speech that was obtained by Legit.ng.
