Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo state has expressed the confidence that he would secure the ticket of the APC for a second term in office despite reportedly facing opposition from his party’s national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

The Edo state governor spoke about his second term ambition on Wednesday, January 1, when hosting ward leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Oredo local government area of Edo state, Premium Times reports.

Obaseki called on APC leaders in Oredo to join him as he continues to fight godfatherism in the state. He said that his pact with Edo residents is to defend their interests and dethrone godfatherism, which threatens to deprive them of their democratic rights.

He accused the APC national chairman of trying to become a godfather in Edo state.

"The last time an incumbent ran for governorship in our party in the state, it was a consensus. It will happen again; we will all agree on consensus," he said.

“Whether direct or indirect primary, you, the people, will vote. Our plan is on the election, not the primaries,” Obaseki stated.

Meanwhile, Charles Idahosa, a chieftain of the APC in Edo state has said state governors on the platform of the party are inching closer to removing the party’s national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

The APC chieftain accused Oshiomhole of being responsible for the party’s crisis because of his combative stance in running its affairs.

He asked the APC party chairman to stop playing the victim and resigned so that a more temperate party-man can pilot the affairs of the party for the benefit of party members and Nigerians.
