A northern youth group under the umbrella of Arewa Youths Assembly (AYA) has declared support for a south-south candidate to emerge as president in 2023.

Mohammed Salihu Danlami, the leader of the group, told reporters on Tuesday, December 31, at a press conference that the north had enjoyed the number one national seat for too long, adding that it would be unfair and malicious for the region to retain power beyond 2023, Daily Trust reports.

The north has occupied the leadership position of the country since independence, more than any other region. It is time for South-South Youths to produce the next President in 2023 to complete their 8 years of leadership," the AYA said.

“Whosoever want to emerge must have a global inter-disciplinary perspective, must engage in long term empirical planning, have a strong communication skills, must be able to prioritise social justice and well-being over financial growth."

The youths said their decision to search for a south-south candidate who should be between the age of 40-50 years is borne out of the fact that those northerners eyeing the seat are well above the age bracket.

The AYA noted that the greatest challenge facing Nigeria today is that of leadership, explaining that the country Nigeria needs a leader that the people can identify with.

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, on January 1, 2020, promised that he would not stay an extra day after his second term tenure officially ends on May 29, 2023.
