Chelsea dropped points against bottom half opposition once again as a resurgent Brighton sealed a stunning late draw for their first point against the Blues ever.
In a fairly lethargic game, it was Lampard’s men who took the lead as early as the 10th minute through Captain Ceasar Azpilicueta who pounced on the ball after a defensive scruff.
The game sparked to life in the second half with Brighton showing more spirit and forcing away keeper Kepa to some decent saves.
While the game seemed to be meandering towards another Chelsea victory, everything changed in the 84th minute as Brighton substitute Alireza Jahanbakhsh emerged with a stunning overhead kick from a corner
The goal was Jahanbakhsh’s second in two games as the Iranian seeks to exert his quality in Graham Potter’s side.
Forward Neil Maupay came close for the home side late on but his stinging effort was parried away by Kepa to keep the scores level.
The draw means Chelsea only inch one point further from fifth place Manchester United who play Arsenal later on Saturday, January 1.
Also notably, the Blues’ struggles against bottom half opposition goes on as the draw means Lampard as already dropped points against the likes of Bournemouth, Southampton, Everton, and Westham in the past seven Premier League games.
