A visibly vexed Pope Francis was compelled to smack a woman's hand severally in a bid to extricate himself from her tight grip.
Pope who was joyously greeting children and pilgrims in St. Peter's Square as he made his way to the Nativity scene at the centre of Vatican City was upset by the conduct of one woman who grabbed and clung on his hand.
In a short video that has since been widely shared on social media sites, the Catholic head was heard shouting at her as he struggled to free himself from her grip.
The woman who was waiting patiently for Pope to greet her opted to grab his hand upon realising he was not going to shake the hands of everyone who was cheering him as walked towards Nativity scene.
Her efforts to share a word with Pope were curtailed after other men dressed in black and who were visibly acting as his security arrived and pushed her hand off the man of God.
Pope who later spoke about the incident admitted that he lost patience and apologised for his conduct on the eve of the new year 2020.
" I lost patience. We lose patience many times. It happens to me too. I apologise for the bad example given yesterday," he said as quoted by BBC.
Meanwhile, Pope Francis has apologised for slapping the hand of the woman who forcefully grabbed his hand as he greeted Catholic faithful on New Year's Eve.
Francis confessed he lost his cool with an over-excited admirer grabbed his hand on Saint Peter's Square, prompting a swift pair of slaps.
