President Buhari holds meeting with Akinwumi Adesina in Aso Rock

President Muhammadu Buhari has held a brief meeting with Akinwumi Adesina, the president of the African Development Bank (AfDB) in Abuja.

Buhari Sallau, the personal assistant to the president on broadcast media disclosed in a tweet that the meeting between Buhari and Adesina occurred at the state house on Tuesday, December 31.

This is the first time Adesina would be meeting Buhari since the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) endorsed him for a second term as African Development Bank (AfDB) president.

Legit.ng reported that Jean-Claude Kassi, the commission’s president announced the decision in a signed communique at the end of the 56th ordinary session of the authority of heads of state and government of ECOWAS.

ECOWAS said it arrived at the decision in recognition of the sterling performance of Adesina during his first term of office as president of the AfDB.

Adesina is the eighth elected AfDB. He was first elected to the five-year term on May 28, 2015, by the bank’s board of governors at its annual meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where the same electoral process will play out next year. He is the first Nigerian ever to occupy the seat since it was established in 1964.

Prior to his second term endorsement by the ECOWAS, Adesina had disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari nominated him for a second term in office.

The AfDB was created to eliminate poverty on the African continent and to improve the living conditions of the African people.

Adesina who was recently named as the African of the Year by Forbes Africa has been commended for his leadership role at the AfDB.
