Following the suspension which was announced by the party's national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP said it had referred the matter to the disciplinary committee led by Ikimi to consider the report of the Ayu Committee and recommend appropriate action

Other lawmakers who were suspended alongside Elumelu are the deputy minority leader, Toby Okechukwu; the minority whip, Gideon Gwani; Wole Oke; Lynda Ikpeazu; Anayo Edwin; and Adekoya Abdul-Majid.

In a reaction to the suspension, Elumelu had said he was surprised the party's NWC would take such action against him and other members of the House of representatives without a fair hearing.

Trouble started for the minority leader after the PDP's NWC invited him and the other lawmakers to explain how they managed to emerge as principal officers of the House of Representatives against the party's will.

However, Elumelu explaining his failure to appear before the NWC said, he had lost an aunt on the said day and left Abuja for Delta immediately after the plenary.

He noted that it was after he left that his gate-man received the letter of invitation at about 7.45 pm on Thursday, December 4.
