- Lai Mohammed has replied Senator Fadahunsi over his allegation on hate speech bill
- Senator Fadahunsi had accused Mohammed of being the brain behind hate speech bill that is currently before the National Assembly
- The minister, however, described Fadahunsi's allegation as a bigger example of fake news
Lai Mohammed, the minister of information and culture, has cleared air on the controversial hate speech bill that is currently before National Assembly, saying that he never sponsored the bill.
Daily Trust reports that the minister dismissed the report attributed to Senator Francis Fadahunsi representing Osun East that he was behind the bill, describing it as a “bigger example” of fake news.
Legit.ng gathered that the senator had alleged, in an interview, that the minister was the sponsor of the bill but only used Senator Sabi Abdullahi as a front.
“Senator Sabi Abdullahi only front for the bill, it actually originated from the executive, specifically, Lai Mohammed and the sole motive is just to box the media into a corner, where it would no longer have the vibrancy to question those in public offices,” the senator was reported as saying.
But in a chat with newsmen in Lagos, Mohammed dismissed the allegation, saying: “This is a bigger example of fake news. I can say categorically that I am not the sponsor of hate speech bill in the National Assembly.”
He, however, stressed that he waas committed to sanitising the social media, saying the greatest challenge to the country today was fake news.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that Fadahunsi accused Lai Mohammed of being behind the controversial hate speech bill being considered for passage into law by the National Assembly.
It was reported that though the hate speech bill is being sponsored by Senator Aliyu Abdullahi, representing Niger North, Senator Fadahunsi alleged that Mohammed is the mastermind behind it.
Senator Fadahunsi said the bill was aimed at crippling quality journalism.
He, however, called on journalists and media practitioners generally to rise up against the bill and ensure it is not passed into law.
