Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi wins 2019 Commonwealth Young Person of the Year award

- Oluwaseun Awodeji Osowobi, the founder of STER, has been awarded the 2019 Commonwealth Young Person of the Year Award for her great works

- The award is given to a young person selected from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas, and Europe with a grand monetary price of £5,000 (N2,378,109)

- The finalists from the regions are given a certificate, a trophy, and grants to continue their humanitarian works

Another Nigerian has made it big on the international scene. Oluwaseun Ayodeji Osowobi was awarded the 2019 Commonwealth Young Person of the Year award.

The honour is given every year to a person selected from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean and the Americas, and Europe. Its aim is to showcase young people’s significant contribution to the development of world leaders and policy makers.

Nominees of the award must be aged age 15-29 and very passionate in solving the world’s problems in the area of poverty reduction, peace building, among others.

According to the Commonwealth, the initiative encourages young people to use their skills for meaningful development in their communities.

The finalists will be given £1,000 (N475,618.12). Added to that, every regional winner will receive an additional £2,000 (N951,236.25), making the total money £3,000 (N1,426,854.38).

The final winner of the award will also receive an additional cash grant of £2,000, bringing her/his total winning to £5,000 (N2,378,109).

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that Oluwaseun, made the Times' 100 Next list for how she has been at the forefront of fighting sexual assault and protecting its survivors.

She created an organisation called Stand to End R*pe (STER) to do the work of educating health workers and providing counselling for survivors.

She was also honoured for her work by the Obama Foundation as an emerging leader. One of the things she plans to do for 2019 is to lobby the Nigerian government to pass a stronger bill to end sexual harassment in universities.
