Minimum wage: Kano announces payment to workers as agreement is reached

Workers in Kano are now to join their colleagues in some other states of Nigeria to enjoy the new minimum wage as an agreement has been reached between the government of Abdullahi Ganduje and the organised labour.

As a result of the decision, the state government announced that starting from December 2019, workers would receive the new wage of N30,000 with consequential adjustments.

"Government has agreed to commence the payment of the new minimum wage effective from December, 2019, while arrears of April-November, 2019, will be settled on instalment basis," the statement said.

The Nation reports that a letter showing the terms of agreement indicated the categories of the increment as follow:

1. GL O9 - 14 %

2. GL-10 - 11 %

3. GL-12 - 10 %

4. GL-13 - 9 %

5. GL-14 - 8%

6. GL-15-17 - 6 %.

The letter was signed by the head of service, the permanent secretary in charge of establishment and another one in charge of salary and wages on the side of the government.

The organised labour also had the state chairman, joint negotiation committee, the shecretary as well as the state treasurer as signatories to the letter of agreement.
