- Due to this, the goveror of the state, Dave Umahi, has ordered the closure of Vincent Hospital at Igbagu area of Ebonyi where the disease was diagnosed
- Umahi also ordered all staff and patients of the hospital to be quarantined at the Virology centre in Abakaliki
Following reports of the outbreak of lassa-fever in St. Vincent Hospital at Igbagu in Izzi local government area of Ebonyi, Governor Dave Umahi has ordered the closure of the establishment.
The directive was given by the governor in a statement signed by his senior special assistant of media, Francis Nwaze, on Friday, The Guardian reports.
In the statement, the state government ordered all staff and patients of the hospital to go to Virology centre in Abakaliki for proper check-up.
The statement partly read: “Governor Dave Umahi has directed that the Ministry of Health under the watch of Dr Daniel Umezurike, Commissioner for Health, in conjunction with the staff of Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital, to immediately address all issues relating to the Lassa fever outbreak.
“The engagement should include a comprehensive examination of all suspects and the clean-up of St. Vincent Hospital."
The governor also ordered all family members, relatives of the staff and patients of the hospital to remain quarantined at the centre, adding that the state's ministry of health will do its utmost to stop the spread of the disease.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that Umahi on Sunday, December 15, said that the decision of choosing the next leader of the state is only in the hands of God.
Umahi, speaking at a thanksgiving service in Abakaliki, said that serious prayers will be offered to God for him to reveal his choice for the state.
The governor said that no one, both within and outside the state, can influence the processes that will lead to the election of the next governor of Ebonyi.
