Victoria Conteh becomes 1st woman to coach Sierra Leone men's Premier League team

Victoria Conteh made history after becoming the first woman to be named a coach over a Sierra Leone men's Premier League side.

The 45-year-old tactician is the only female coach in her country to have bagged the highest coaching certificate on the continent - Caf ‘A’ license.

According to BBC Conteh penned a two year deal with the East End Tigers - formerly known as Gem Stars of Tongo.

"We've decided to appoint her because she's qualified and that's the bottom line," owner Victor Lewis told BBC Sport.

"It shouldn't be a man or woman thing, it should be about who is qualified to do the job. "We're happy to secure her services and we believe her appointment is good for the women's game.

"She has a two-year mandate and we've given her the target to finish in the top four and we are very confident that she can deliver."

Conteh had previously managed her country's national under-20 women's team and the Sierra Leone Police Women's outfit.

She had also been in charge of the defunct men's second-tier side Delta Strikers on a temporary basis.

"I'm happy and proud about the appointment and I welcome it with open hands," Conteh told BBC Sport. "This is a surprise Christmas package for me because I wasn't expecting it.

"I know it's not easy for a woman to serve as coach in the top flight in Sierra Leone but I'll cope with the pressure and I'm determined to do well."

Conteh took charge of her first game over the weekend in their second match of the season - playing 1-1 after regulation period against Kallon FC.

They have never won a Premier Division title in their history, but Conteh wants to change that.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Arsenal have announced the appointment of former midfielder Mikel Arteta as their new manager.

The Spaniard joined the Gunners on a three-and-a-half-year deal after joining them from Manchester City.

Arteta has been with the Citizens since 2016 after the appointment of former Bayern Munich boss three years ago.
