Suspected DSS officer reportedly shoots man while targeting runaway Christmas cow

- A suspected DSS officer reportedly shot a man dead in Alor, Anambra, while trying to shoot a runaway cow

- The police in the state refuted the earlier claim that the act was committed by a police officer and released a statement to set the records straight

- Haruna Mohammed, the Anambra Command spokesperson, said the corpse has been taken to the mortuary for autopsy, adding that the case is under investigation

- The Department of State Services (DSS) has however faulted reports that one of its operatives attached to a VIP shot a native dead in error at Alor community.

Tragedy struck in Anambra state on Wednesday, December 25, when an operative of the Department of State Services (DSS) mistakenly shot a man dead in Alor, Idemili South local government area of the state.

The DSS operative attached to a VIP's residence in the town had attempted to shoot a cow running away from the house, The Nation reports.

Legit.ng learned that the victim identified as Onyeocha Umuokwu was a domestic staff to one Engr Emeka Eze.

Haruna Mohammed, the Anambra Police Command spokesperson, refuted earlier reports that the act was committed by a policeman, describing it as misleading. He then went on to reveal who really shot Umuokwu.

He added that though the alleged incident was not reported to the police, "detectives led by DPO Nnobi Division visited the scene but neither the Engineer nor the victim’s relative is willing to provide any useful information that will aid police investigation."

Mohammed, however, said the corpse has been taken to the mortuary for autopsy, adding that the case is under investigation.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that a 37-year-old man reportedly beat his wife to death in Ogun state.

It was learnt that the altercation between Mutiu Sonola and Zainab Shotayo started early on Christmas day with the man rebuffing entreaties as he pounced on the woman over what neighbours described as a minor issue.

The 34-year-old woman reportedly slumped following the punches from her husband. She, thereafter, went into a coma and never regained consciousness.

UPDATE: The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied reports that one of its operatives attached to a VIP shot a native dead in error at Alor community in Anambra state.

DSS's spokesperson, Peter Afunanya, described reports that an operative shot dead a man identified as Onyeocha Umuokwu “while targeting a cow that was running away” as untrue.
