Presidency 2023: PDP plans consensus candidate

- Instead of primaries, the PDP has unveiled plans to adopt a consensus candidate for the 2023 presidential elections

- The party's BoT chairman, Senator Walid Jibril, said consultations have started to ensure a candidate acceptable by is produced

- Jibril said the party will also reconcile all aggrieved members in a bid to put up a strong and united front and dislodge the ruling APC from power in 2023

The preparations for the 2023 presidential elections are now in top gear as the lead opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has kickstarted the move to produce a consensus candidate.

According to The Nation, the first step planned by the PDP was to engage its members nationwide so as to produce a consensus candidate who will be accepted by all.

Legit.ng gathers that the party also plans to reconcile all its aggrieved members in a bid to put up a strong and united front and dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from power in 2023.

This was revealed in Kaduna by Senator Walid Jibril who is the PDP's Board of Trustees (BOT) chairman.

Jibril noted that as part of the reconciliation process, the party will discourage the suspension or dismissal of party members and encourage dialogue from the local governments to the states and the national level.

The PDP chieftain also clarified that the move to shop for a consensus candidate does not bar any party member who is interested in the presidential race from making such known.

Nevertheless, Jibril said the better option is to agree on a consensus candidate and strengthen the party enough to be able to defeat the APC in 2023.

He noted that the party's National Working Committee (NWC) has already started consulting with relevant stakeholders to make the move acceptable by all.

The PDP chieftain also disclosed that the party was already working on resolving the crisis between Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state and his Bayelsa state counterpart, Seriake Dickson.

Earlier, a report by Daily Trust indicated that the PDP was considering solving many of its challenges before reaching a decision on the zoning of its 2023 presidential ticket.

According to the report, the PDP was working towards resolving all internal squabbles, reactivating and strengthening its various structures across the country and reforming itself before coming out on its official position for 2023.
