Southampton were able to cage the Blues in the midfield not giving space to pass the ball around in their usual style.
And their hard work paid off when Pierre Hojbjerg released a pass to Obafemi who displaced Kurt Zouma and finished off the move with a left-foot shot to make it 1-0 in the 30th minute.
Tammy Abraham hit the side-netting in the early exchanges of the second half but Ralph Hasenhuttl's men were able to hold off Chelsea's attacking threat.
Then in the 73rd minute, Redmond scored the second from open play as he put the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga in goal.
Chelsea did not create any meaningful chance in their search a goal as Southampton stood tall in their defence set up.
The Saint ran away winners of the game and move three points out of safety as Frank Lampard's men remain in top four with just two points ahead of Tottenham and Sheffield United.
