Benue state governor, Samuel Ortom has commended Nigerians over the release of human rights activist and pro-democracy campaigner, Omoyele Sowore, as well as former National Security Adviser, Colonel Sambo Dasuki.
Ortom in a statement sent to journalists on Wednesday, December 25 by his media aide, Terver Akase, stated that the dogged clamour of Nigerians led to their release.
The governor equally commended President Muhammadu Buhari for directing the release of the duo in accordance with the rule of law.
He stated that Nigeria which prides itself as the giant of Africa and beacon of democracy must, at all times, be seen as a champion of the rule of law and respecter of human rights.
The governor stressed that countries which practise true democracy across the world obey court orders and respect the fundamental rights of their citizens.
Meanwhile, Ekiti state governor Dr Kayode Fayemi has commended President Buhari for the release of Dasuki and rights activist, Omoyele Sowore from detention.
The governor said President Buhari’s intervention has once again proven that he is a stickler for due process and an apostle of the rule of law.
In a statement sent to journalists by his spokesman, Yinka Oyebode, Fayemi described the president’s gesture, which came on the Christmas Eve, as a good Christmas gift for the duo, their families and associates as well as a soothing balm for the country.
