Sowore, Dasuki's release: Presidency reacts, says it wants to set an example

- The presidency has reacted to the release of Omoyele Sowore and Sambo Dasuki

- Presidential aide, Garba Shehu, said the government released both men to show that it respects the rule of law

- Shehu, however, said the presidency does not agree with the verdict of the court but has to obey

The presidency has disclosed why it agreed to release Omoyele Sowore, the convener of the Revolution Now protest, and Sambo Dasuki, a former national security adviser.

In an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, December 25, the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, Garba Shehu, said the federal government wanted to show the world that it adheres to the rule of law.

He said though the President Muhammadu Buhari administration does not agree with the verdict of the court to release both men, it had to obey.

Speaking on their release, Shehu said: “The government is not compromising anything. The government wants to set an important example of obedience to the law even when you disagree with what the court says you should do."

He also spoke on the issue of cabals in the President Buhari-led government. According to him, the word was coined by Nigerians.

When Mr Jonathan was in office, wasn’t it said that he had a cabal? When President Yar’adua was in office, wasn’t it said that he had a cabal?

“So what we are saying is that Nigerians have formed the practice by labelling people that are in an advisable position of the President as a cabal,” he said.

Dasuki was arrested in December 2015 and has been in the custody of the Department of State Service (DSS) ever since. Sowore, on the other hand, was first arrested by the DSS on August 3, 2019, ahead of a planned nationwide Revolution Now protest. He was released in December and rearrested less than 24 hours later.

Both men were set free on Tuesday, December 24. A video showed the moment Dasuki walked into his home after four years in detention. There were screams of joy from his family members.
