Akinwumi Adesina, the president of the African Development Bank (AfDB), has been endorsed for a second term by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Jean-Claude Kassi, the commission’s president, announced the decision in a signed communique at the end of the 56th ordinary session of the authority of heads of state and government of ECOWAS, that held in Abuja, the Cable reports.
ECOWAS said it arrived at the decision in recognition of the sterling performance of Adesina during his first term of office as president of the AfDB.
Adesina is the eighth elected AfDB. He was first elected to the five-year term on May 28, 2015, by the bank’s board of governors at its annual meetings in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, where the same electoral process will play out next year. He is the first Nigerian ever to occupy the seat since it was established in 1964.
Prior to his second term endorsement by the ECOWAS, Adesina had disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari nominated him for a second term in office.
Adesina disclosed this on Sunday, October 6, when he was conferred with the Emeka Anyaoku lifetime achievement award, The Cable reports.
Legit.ng gathered that Hallmark of Labour Foundation presented the award to the AfDB president who was the minister of Agriculture during Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency.
Speaking during the award ceremony, Adesina recalled his achievement while serving as Nigeria’s agriculture minister, saying the agriculture sector witnessed tremendous improvement under his watch.
