Ben Ukpebi, the chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) in Cross River, who was recently kidnapped, has finally regained his freedom.
Ukpebi's freedom from the den of those who kidnapped him happened after his family members paid a ransom of N5 million as opposed to the initial N20 million demanded, Vanguard reports.
Legit.ng reported that the Nigeria police in the state said in the morning of Wednesday, December 18, that Ukpepi was actually kidnapped.
Ukpepi was abducted in his residence in Akpabuyo local government area of Cross River state, according to the police.
The spokesperson of the police in the state, DSP Irene Ugbo, gave the information in reaction to earlier reports of the NLC chairman's disappearance.
The police spokesperson said that the incident happened at 7.30 pm on Tuesday, December 17.
“The story of the kidnap of the NLC chairman is true. He was kidnapped in Akpabuyo in his house.
“We got the report this morning. The anti-cultism and kidnapping unit is on top of the situation to rescue him," the police spokesperson said.
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Ukpepi, was on Tuesday, December 17, kidnapped at the Akpabuyo local government area of the state.
A source, who spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity, revealed that the incident took place in the evening of Tuesday.
The source said Ukpepi was abducted in his own residence by the abductors.
The source stated: ”When he went inside the house he got a call, because of the noise inside he decided to go outside to take the call that was when his abductors struck."
