Imo election: Supreme Court voids Uche Nwosu’s candidature

The candidature of an inlaw to Rochas Okorocha, a former governor of Imo state, Uche Nwosu, has been nullified by the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
Nwosu who was the flagbearer for the Action Alliance (AA) party was said to have had double nomination during the 2019 general election.
In a judgement delivered by Justice Adamu Augie, the apex court Nwosu was not qualified to vie for the election.
The court said Nwosu doubled as both the candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) and AA as he also won the nomination to contest under APC.
However, the court said that by virtue of Nwosu’s double candidature and in line with the clear provisions of the Electoral Act, he was bound to be disqualified from the election.
The court also affirmed the judgments of the High Court and the Court of Appeal on the results of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
"The appellant cannot be allowed to benefit from his own iniquity. The action is not caught up by limitation of time," Justice Augie said.
"This case rest on the issue of illegality and this court cannot be used to enforce illegalities. This appeal is hereby dismissed," the judge added.
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Imo state governor, Emeka Ihedioha, on Tuesday, December 17, directed the accountant general of the state to commence payment of December salaries to all workers in Imo.
