Education sector: FG commends international organisation's commitment
- Plan International Nigeria has been commended for its commitment to the development of Nigeria's education sector

- According to the FG, with funding support from Plan International led-EU Consortium, the developed Accelerated Basic Education Curriculum (ABEC) was made available
An international organisation, Plan International Nigeria has been commended by the Federal Government of Nigeria over its commitment to the development of the Accelerated Basic Education Curriculum (ABEC) in the country.
The encomium was showered on Plan International Nigeria at the National Council on Education which was chaired by the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, in Port-Harcourt during its 64th session.
Plan International is an independent development and humanitarian non-profit organisation that advances children’s rights and equality for girls. The organisation also supports the children’s rights from birth until they reach adulthood, and enable children to prepare for – and respond to – crises and adversity.
The opening ceremony of the ministerial session was attended by the Executive Governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike, the minister of education, women affairs, Adamu Adamu and Pauline Tallen, respectively.
Also, the chairperson of the Joint Consultative Committee on Education (JCCE), among others were present at the council.

A communique issued after the session identified the role of Plan International Nigeria, the Nigerian government said Federal Ministry of Education (FME) through the NERDC with funding support from Plan International led-EU Consortium had developed Accelerated Basic Education Curriculum (ABEC).
The council also approved the curriculum for the implementation of Accelerated Basic Education Programme - a condensed version of the nine-Year Basic Curriculum to be implemented in a three-year cycle - nationwide.
The communique also noted that Plan International is leading the consortium which includes; Save the Children and Gender Equality Peace and Development Centre (GEPADC) which facilitated the development of the curriculum with funding from the European Union through the Response, Recovery and Resilience in Borno state project.
The overall objective of the project is to increase the resilience of the education system and services in conflict-affected Borno state, Nigeria.
Speaking on the endorsement, Acting Country Director of Plan International Nigeria, Oji Ogbureke, appreciated the federal ministry of education for the partnership and confidence it had in Plan International.
Ogureke said: “Education indeed cannot wait which is why Plan International will continue to provide support for Nigerian children to access quality education in every situation they find themselves including in emergency to secure a better future.”
