Barrister Abdullahi Jallo, a constitutional lawyer, has defended the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Tanko Muhammed, over his call for the amendment of the constitution to address Sharia law’s peculiarities.

The CJN had on Wednesday, December 11, advocated the amendment of the constitution to accommodate some of the concerns of Muslims and the Sharia law while speaking at an event Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria Faculty of Law’s Moot Court.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), however, berated the CJN for the call which it described as ill-timed, provocative and unacceptable.

Reacting to the development, Jallo, who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress in Gombe state, said the CJN, whom he said he had known for long, is not a religious bigot as the CAN's reaction suggested, Daily Trust reports.

The lawyer said the CJN should not be painted with the brush of bigotry just for expressing his personal opinion on an aspect of law they were both trained on.

According to him, the Christian body misunderstood the CJN’s statement.

He added that Tanko's statement was about the law establishing the Sharia Court which he said was in need of reform in view of the changing time and the development in Sharia laws.

The lawyer added that the Decree 45, which was signed by a former president, Olusegun Obasanjo, when he was the military head of state in 1976 had not taken care of the peculiarities of the Sharia laws.
