Diego Maradona: Argentine legend names Di Stefano as best player in history

- Diego Maradona believes Alfredo Di Stefano is the greatest football star ever

- The Argentine football icon says Di Stefano was a superior quality above any other player

- Maradona also commends Lionel Messi for playing amazing football for Barcelona and Argentina

Diego Maradona has dabbled into the debate on who the best football star is, with the Argentina football icon overlooking Lionel Messi and picking Alfredo Di Stefano as the best player in the game's long history.

Often considered the biggest name in football, Maradona took everyone by surprise as he shunned his generational rival Pele and picked his fellow countryman in what appeared to be a massive show of humility.

The Gimnasia de La Plata manager, who had an enviable and glistering career across European top flights including Napoli and Barcelona, said Di Stefano was superior to anybody in terms of quality.

He also slammed Selecao legend Pele of overlooking the Argentine's genuine quality in football history.

“I think the best was Di Stefano. He was superior to everyone – even me," Maradona told TyC Sports' Libero.

“Pele didn't want to recognise Di Stefano's talents. Pele's friends invented a trophy especially for him for being a living legend of football. I even beat Pele in Rio for being the best in history!”

Maradona also talked about playing with great names in football history and further said the best shirts he swapped with another player was with Gullit and Van Basten.

“The best shirts I swapped were with Gullit and Van Basten when they were at AC Milan,” the Argentine said.

“The player who I connected best with was [former Napoli striker] Careca.”

Speaking about Messi winning sixth Ballon d'Or, Maradona praised the Barcelona captain for playing amazing football, reminiscing how he taught Messi to play free-kicks.

"I think I'd have quite a few [Ballons d'Or], but what Messi is doing is outstanding. I would never like to face Messi – not ever." Maradona submitted.
