FIRS gives 7-day ultimatum to tax defaulters

- The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) commences nationwide tax enforcement exercise

- Wahab Gbadamosi, spokesperson for the service says defaulters who refuse to pay taxes will be prosecuted

- The FIRS discloses that all outstanding tax liabilities will be recovered from defaulters

The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has given a seven-day ultimatum to defaulters in the country to pay up or be sanctioned.

Wahab Gbadamosi, the head of communications at the service, in a statement, issued the ultimatum when disclosing that the organisation had begun a nationwide tax enforcement exercise from Wednesday, December 18.

“The FIRS hereby informs all taxpayers (individuals, partnerships, enterprises, corporate organisations, ministries, departments and agencies) who are in default of payment of taxes arising from self-assessment, tax audit, tax investigation, transfer pricing audit, demand notices and any other liabilities, that the Service will commence a nationwide tax enforcement exercise from 18th December 2019 to prosecute defaulters and recover all outstanding tax liabilities," Gbadamosi said.

The FIRS said the taxes to be collected include petroleum profits tax, companies income tax, value-added tax, withholding tax, tertiary education tax.

Others are the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) levy, stamp duty and capital gains tax.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng earlier reported that trouble seems to be brewing in the FIRS as members of staff of the service are insisting that the most senior director should take over as acting chairman.

The former chairman of the Babatunde Fowler handed over to Abiodun Aina, following the expiration of his tenure, The Nation reports.

But some workers of the organisation, under the aegis of the Joint Union Council of FIRS, have opposed Abiodun Aina’s role as acting chairman, saying he is not a director in the service and lacks the basic qualification to be employed into the service.
