- The Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, discloses that the sum of N37billion has been budgeted for the renovation of the National Assembly Complex
- Lawan says many parts of the National Assembly building are dilapidated because the complex has not undergone a major renovation for 20 years
- The Senate president explains that President Buhari agreed to renovate the building after he was told about the condition of the Complex
The sum of N37 billion has been approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for the renovation of the National Assembly Complex.
Premium Times reports that the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, told journalists in Abuja on Monday, December 16, that the money is part of the 2020 budget of the Federal Capital Development Administration (FCDA).
Lawan said many parts of the National Assembly building are dilapidated because the complex has not undergone a major renovation for 20 years
“We met the president and (it was) related the condition of the complex. The president responded and said he was going to renovate the complex. The phase one renovation will commence – the chambers and committee rooms in the white house,” Lawan said.
“N37 billion was sourced and was given. It was put under the FCT, not National Assembly. All we required is to have the complex renovated."
The Senate president, who described the National Assembly complex as a national asset, explained that the renovation work is under the control of the federal capital development administration.
Meanwhile, the plan by the National Assembly to spend N37 billion for the renovation of its Complex is a final confirmation of the corruption level in the All Progressives Congress (APC), the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has claimed.
The PDP further alleged that the budget for the renovation of the National Assembly complex is simply an "unpardonable rip-off plot and the last straw of the brazen corruption that pervades the current administration".
In a statement by the national publicity secretary of the party, Kola Ologbondiyan, such budget which it claimed is bloated cannot be defended, especially knowing that the complex was constructed with N7billion.
