Lionel Messi has been named "sportsperson of the decade” by William Hill less than a month he clinched Ballon d’Or gong for the sixth time record.

The Barcelona star enjoyed a remarkable football year last season under Ernesto Valverde, guiding the Catalans to the domestic double.

In recognition of his incredible individual brilliance, the Argentine forward was awarded FIFA the Best gong in September.

Messi also won his sixth Ballon d'Or award, beating stiff competition from his arch-rival Cristiano Ronaldo and Liverpool's centre-back Virgil van Dijk.

At 32, the Argentine forward still continues to dazzle, with his brilliance and ingenuity giving him an edge over several other world-class sportsmen and sportswomen as he clinched the William Hill's award.
