Labour to begin warning strike over minimum wage

- The organised labour in Ogun state have resolved to embark on two days warning strike

- The labour unions stated that they won't postpone the planned action unless the state government invite them for discussion

- The entire workforce of the state would proceed on two days warning strike from Thursday, December 19 to Friday, December 20

The organised labour comprising of Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Ogun state on Monday, December 16 said they have resolved to embark on two days warning strike with effect from Thursday, December 19.

The labour unions stated that they won't postpone the planned action unless the state government invite them for discussion on consequential adjustment on the new N30,000 minimum wage on or before Wednesday, December 18.

The workers stated this in a joint press statement signed by the state leaderships of both NLC and TUC, Comrade Bankole Emmanuel and Comrade Fajobi Olubunmi.

Addressing reporters at the NLC secretariat in the state capital, Abeokuta, Comrade Bankole Emmanuel said it was very distressing that despite writing the state government five times between August and December on the need to set up the negotiation committee to determine the consequential adjustment on the new minimum wage, the state government has failed to attend to their demand.

He lamented that instead of listening to their calls and attend to their demand, the workers’ knowledge of the state government’s position was by media reports credited to the state government that the new minimum wage had been factored into 2020 budget.

“We view these claim and comment as reflective of the stand of the state government on the issue and thus infer that the government is clearly unwilling to implement the new minimum wage in the state let alone negotiate its consequential adjustments,” he stated.

He further said having exhausted the laid down procedures, the entire workforce of the state would proceed on two days warning strike from Thursday, December 19 to Friday, December 20.

Meanwhile, the leadership of the NLC on Thursday, December 12, called on all state governors to ensure the implementation of the federal government approved N30,000 minimum wage.

The NLC warned that non-implementation of the newly approved minimum wage by Tuesday, December 31, would lead to strike action by its members.
