Sowore: We have to respect rule of law - Senate president Lawan warns

- Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, has revealed why President Buhari-led government must respect the rule of law

- Buhari had been criticised for the invasion of court by the DSS operatives to arrest Omoyele Sowore

- Lawan, however, said it is mandatory for the APC-led administration to obey the Nigerian constitution

Amid criticisms against the alleged lack of respect for the rule of law, the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, has advised President Muhammadu Buhari-led government to adhere to the supreme law in Nigeria.

Premium Times reports that Lawan spoke in Abuja on Monday, December 16, while fielding question by a journalist who asked about the repeated violations of the rule of law by President Buhari’s administration.

Legit.ng gathered that the number three citizen of the country said that the rule of law is something that "we all have to adhere to."

He said part of respect for the rule of law was to ensure that those suspected of criminal activities are taken to court; but they should also be freed if they are not found guilty, he said.

“If someone is not guilty of an offence, such a person should not suffer any undue consequences,” he added.

The Buhari administration has recently faced strident criticisms from Nigerians and the international community over its disrespect for the rule of law.

The latest of such violations occurred when armed Department of Security Service (SSS) officials stormed an Abuja court to arrest an activist, Omoyele Sowore, who had been granted bail by a court.

The DSS action has been condemned by most Nigerians, rights groups and the international community.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had previously reported that a Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, asked the attorney-general of the federation, Abubakar Malami, to order the DSS to release detained activist, Sowore.

It was gathered thatFalana said a team of lawyers had visited the DSS to get Sowore released but were advised to go through the AGF.

The lawyer urged Malami to release Sowore from custody in line with the order of the Federal High Court admitting him to bail pending the trial.

Falana expressed the confidence that the Malami would order the release of Sowore since no court has issued any remand order for his detention.
