Oshiomhole versus Obaseki: Oyegun explains genesis of crisis in APC

- Former chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun, has described the political crisis in Edo state as tragic

- Oyegun says the crisis has a root in the bid by a mentor to continue to treat the governor as a child

- The former governor of Edo says the crisis is being resolved for peace in the state

Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, a former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has revealed the deep-seated reason for the unending friction between his successor, Adams Oshiomhole, and Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo.

Oyegun, who described the political battle in Edo as tragic, said on Thursday, December 13, that the governor was being treated like a child.

He said a mentor should be able to allow the person he has trained to become mature.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Oyegun, a former governor of Edo state, spoke with journalists at the 22nd investiture of the Nigerian Institute of Management (NIM) in Lagos.

According to Oyegun, the political crisis between Oshiomhole and Obaseki had made the dangers of godfatherism very obvious.

“It is a good thing to mentor somebody, to have an elder, more experienced to help bring up the younger one.

“But when you have mentored him, and he has attained maturity and growth, do not keep treating him like a child," Oyegun said.

Oyegun said, however, that the crisis was already being addressed with the hope that there would soon be peace in the state.

The former national chairman commended Obaseki for his performance since he became a governor.
