Newspaper review for December 11: Nigeria to spend N750bn on fuel subsidy

The headlines of mainstream Nigerian newspapers for Wednesday, December 11, are focused on the recent exchanges between Adams Oshiomhole and Nyesom Wike, what government will be spending on fuel subsidy in 2020, National Assembly's plan to separate Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) office from justice minister, among other top stories.

The Nation reports that Adams Oshiomhole and River state governor, Nyesom Wike, exchanged words as both tried to show the achievements their parties have made in making Nigeria better.

This happened at the presentation of a book titled The Big Interviews: How to get the news subjects and angles that make the headlines, by Eric Osagiein Abuja on Tuesday, December 10, where both had the opportunity to deliver speeches.

The Punch reports that the federal government will spend N750.81bn on subsidising fuel in 2020 as shown by the Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency.

The newspaper also added that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation has been the organisation bearing the responsibility of subsidy for more than two years.

This Day reports that the long-demand for the separation of the AGF from the minister of justice came up again on Tuesday, December 10 as the bill in its motion passed second reading in the House.

When the bill is passed, Section 150 of the 1999 Constitution which stipulates that office the AGF will also be the justice minister of the federation will be amended.

The Guardian reports that around 265 federal government agencies went against the fiscal and audit laws guiding the operations of government accounts in 2017, which made more than N300 billion unaccounted for.

The above was the position of the office of the auditor-general for the federation in its released 2017 report after the newspaper accused the office, the National Assembly and the presidency of negligence to release the same report two years after the fiscal year already ended.
