Orji Uzor Kalu's conviction not a victory for Buhari's anti-corruption fight - Poll shows

Thursday, December 5, was a significant day in Nigeria's political history as a former Abia state governor and current senator of Abia North senatorial district was sent to 12 years in jail.

Kalu was convicted by the Federal High Court in Lagos over N7.1bn fraud after a trial that spanned 12 years.

With the conviction, Senator Kalu joined the list of five other governors who have been convicted.

Is this landmark judgement, a seeming victory for President Muhammadu Buhari's administration whose core mandate is the commitment to eradicating corruption in the country.

Legit.ng asks Nigerians their opinions on this in a poll conducted on Facebook and Twitter.

A summary of the poll findings: Majority of the respondents are of the opinion that Kalu's conviction is not a victory for President Buhari-led administration's fight against corruption.

Out of the over 3,000 that participated in the poll on Facebook, 63% believe that Kalu's conviction is not a victory for President Buhari's anti-corruption war while 37% believe otherwise.

On Twitter, 24% are of the opinion that Kalu's conviction is an indication that President Buhari's anti-corruption war is succeeding while 35% said the senator's conviction does not in any way signify a victory of Buhari's anti-corruption fight.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian presidency has reacted to Kalu's conviction, warning those stealing public funds, saying that they would also be jailed.

The special adviser to the president on political matters, Senator Babafemi Ojudu, gave the warning in a Facebook post hours after Kalu was convicted.
