A serving Nigerian senator, Muhammadu Danjuma Goje, has announced that he will not contest for any elective office in the future after his current tenure in the Senate expires.
Goje, a former governor of Gombe state, made the disclosure on Sunday, December 8, at the venue of his empowerment programme in the Pantami Stadium, Gombe state, Daily Trust reports.
The senator said he is stepping aside in 2023 to give young politicians from the state the chance to also hold elective positions. He, however, stated that he would remain in politics.
The lawmaker said he had contested and won seven elections and was never defeated at the polls. He noted that during the cause of his political career he served as a secretary of local government, member Bauchi state House of Assembly, a onetime minister, a two-term governor of Gombe state and was elected three times as a senator.
According to Premium Times, Senator Goje said he will continue to be an active card-carrying member of the APC and participate in all political activities at all levels.
In another news report, the APC party has begun moves to resolve the dispute between the governor of Edo state, Godwin Obaseki, and the national chairman of the party, Adams Oshiomhole.
The party through some of its governors has decided to let go of their personal difference with the national chairman of the party to ensure a reconciliation process.
The Nation reports that sources within the party said APC members are worried that if the governors fail to get involved it may cost the party losing Edo state during the 2020 governorship election.
