NBS says police top list of most corrupt government agencies in Nigeria

The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has been declared as the most corrupt government agency in Nigeria, according to a 2019 corruption survey released by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Friday, December 6.

The report titled corruption in Nigeria: patterns and trend was conducted by a United Nations agency, the UNODC and the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS).

In the latest 2019 report, police officers top the charts as the most corrupt government agency with 33%. Next to police officers are land registry officers with 26%, and revenue officers with 25%. The survey stated that the least corrupt officials are health workers with 5%.

The first corruption survey report on Nigeria was presented in 2016, where the police was identified as the most corrupt public agency.

The 2019 report also stated that eight states - Gombe, Niger, Kwara, Kogi, Osun, Enugu, Ebonyi and Akwa Ibom – experienced an increase in bribery in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the Ohanaeze Ndigbo youth council worldwide, on Friday, December 6, advised President Muhammadu Buhari to identify more corrupt politicians and ex-governors and jail them.

The group made the comment when reacting to the judgment of Federal High Court that sentenced the former governor of Abia state, Orji Uzor Kalu, to 12 years imprisonment.

Ohanaeze in a statement signed by the group's president general, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro and its secretary-general, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, described Buhari’s anti-corruption stance as impartial, noting that Kalu’s conviction would be a deterrent to other corrupt politicians.
