- The speaker accuses Trump of trying to corrupt the American elections for his own benefit
The speaker of the United States House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, announced on Thursday, December 5, that the House judiciary committee will move forward to impeach President Trump.
Reuters reports that Pelosi said she had instructed the House judiciary panel to draft articles of impeachment against the US president.
The speaker, according to NBC News made the announcement in a brief televised statement when speaking directly to the American people.
“Sadly, but with confidence and humility, with allegiance to our founders and our heart full of love for America, today, I am asking our chairmen to proceed with articles of impeachment,” Pelosi said.
The speaker said it was clear that President Trump had abused his power for his own political benefit at the expense of the American national security by withholding military aid and crucial meeting with Ukraine in exchange for an announcement of an investigation into his political rival.
Pelosi noted that leading American constitutional scholars on Wednesday, December 4, had told the judiciary committee that the president's actions without a doubt were a profound violation of public trust.
She said Trump was trying to corrupt the American elections for his own benefit, noting that the president had engaged in abuse of power in violation of the oath of office he took to defend the American constitution.
Meanwhile, the United State's panel in charge of the impeachment inquiry to oust President Donald Trump from office has said that its evidence against him is not only clear but also overwhelming.
The panel claimed that by seeking Ukraine's help in his 2020 re-election ambition, Trump prioritised personal interest instead of the nation's political integrity, BBC reports.
However, the US president has referred to the report of the panel as unpatriotic and a witch-hunt instigated by the Democrats in the House, adding that he is not guilty of any of the allegations made against him.
In another news report, President Donald Trump has referred to the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, as a 'two-faced' person over a viral video that captured moments in a meeting of NATO leaders held at Buckingham Palace.
The said video showed Trudeau having a brief chat with UK leader, Boris Johnson, French president, Emmanuel Macron, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte, and Princess Anne, Queen Elizabeth's daughter, BBC stated.
Following this incident, the US president abruptly cancelled a planned press conference and headed back to Washington.
