Popular Nigerian professor and Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, has condemned the arrest and continued detention of Omoyele Sowore, the co-convener of Revolution Now protest.

The popular academic and social critic described Sowore’s detention as an act of disrespect to the Judiciary, Channels TV reports.

Soyinka was quoted to have asked: “Is Sowore Miyetti Allah?” in a statement titled Between THUGGERY and STATE DISOBEDIENCE, Channels TV reports.

Miyetti Allah is a group accused of being behind the herdsmen crisis in the country, though the group has repeatedly dismissed the allegation.

The respected elder statesman lamented that the State Security Service (SSS) did not only refuse to release Sowore after fulfilling his bail conditions but cooked up ‘childish’ claims to defend its actions.

He said the judiciary sector in Nigeria, and Africa generally, is constantly under siege.

“Much of the judiciary across the continent remains constantly under siege – Nigeria is no exception. Needless to say, it often strikes me that the “learned brotherhood” could do more to protect, and assert itself.

“Apart from the obvious and numerous scandals of moral deficit that require constant internal purgation, there are instances where it does fail to protect itself even from putative and/or illegal power,” he said.

Soyinka said disobeying the court order is synonymous with thuggery, only with slight differences.

He said: “So, finally, what do thuggery and court disobedience have in common? Everything! They are both Scofflaw manifestations. Unilateral declarations of Supra-Law delusions.

“One is simply a more structured, more hypocritical version of the other. One knows itself for what it is, while the other tries to camouflage its abnormality under a higher purpose, the more elastic the better . Such is that often specious alibi labelled “national security”.

Meanwhile, the refusal of the SSS to release Sowore and his co-accused, Olawale Bakare, has annoyed Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

As a result of this, the judge threatened to jail Yusuf Bichi, director-general of the security outfit. The judge gave the warning in Abuja on Monday, November 25.
